Soft enamel pins are die struck metal pins that are colored by applying soft enamel paint in the recessed channels created from the stamping process. The raised metal lines separate the colors so that they don’t blend. After being colored, the pins are baked to create a glossy, protective surface.
The major advantages to soft enamel pins are that they are cheaper than some other types of enamel pins and can be produced quicker than its hard enamel counterpart. Another important advantage is that it can be made with a higher level of detail than hard enamel because it isn’t polished down. This makes the raised metal lines between the colors slightly thinner, allowing for wider color channels.
Soft enamel pins are created using a different coloring process that allows them to be plated in a number of different ways, making it a more versatile product. The coloring process used to make soft enamel pins is also significantly faster as it only consists of one layer of colored enamel. The lack of extra enamel layers also makes them cheaper to produce.
